Why Do I Have Bad Breath All The Time?

Lots of people up and down the country suffer from issues relating to bad breath and sometimes the implications of bad breath can be minimised and dismissed. Constantly worrying about your breath isn’t good for your anxiety or self-confidence in general and we at Old Windsor don’t want any of our patients missing out on doing the things they love, or spending time with family because they’re worried about their breath. With that in mind, we’ve put together a little guide on oral health and bad breath in Berkshire in the hope of helping you set out on your journey to better breath. bad-breath

What Causes Bad Breath?

Firstly, there is no one size fits all answer to this question, it’s not cut and dry and in order to get to the root cause of your case of oral health and bad breath we’d need to see you in the practice but to have a general idea here are some of the basics.

Diet

What are you consuming on the daily? Because if you’re eating lots of high flavour, high smell foods then perhaps that could be adding to your bad breath concerns. Foods like garlic, onion, curry, and red meat all come with strong smells that can linger in our mouths sometimes even overnight.

Then there’s what we’re drinking, if you’re a coffee addict then really it could be time to think about cutting down. Coffee is well known for causing bad breath and if you’re not rinsing or brushing afterwards the smell can linger all day.

Smoking

I won’t linger on this one too long as I think we all understand the oral health and bad breath implications smoking has on us. That being said, smokers’ breath lingers and the only way to deal with this is to stop smoking.

Oral Hygiene

For lots of patients, we see one of the causes of bad breath is that they aren’t practising complete oral hygiene and food debris and particles are getting trapped between the teeth, rotting and realising acids. Dealing with your bad breath could be as simple as seeing the hygienist and then making sure you’re flossing every day and using a minty fresh mouthwash.

Tongue Health

For some reason, some people don’t think about their tongue as part of their oral health and thus part of their oral hygiene. If you’re struggling with bad breath one of the first things you can do is to check the colour of your tongue. If it’s anything other than pink it could be that it’s got a buildup of bacteria on it and needs you to give it a good clean. You can clean your tongue with a brush or you could take up tongue scraping, an ancient practice that uses a flat-edge tool to scrape off the top layer of bacteria from the surface.

If you’re experiencing issues with bad breath then please do book in and see us, there’s no judgement or embarrassment we want to give you back your confidence.
