windsor-dental-implantsFar more than just a prosthesis, at Old Windsor Dental Practice, we help patients regain their confidence with the help of dental implants in Windsor. If you are fed up with having to rotate your diet around what your current prostheses can handle, then dental implants in Windsor may be the answer you are looking for!

But are you concerned that having implants fitted will be uncomfortable? Have you heard of an instance in the media of an implant fitting going wrong?

Not to worry! We have composed a step by step guide of how our dentists fit dental implants in Windsor for you to read through before deciding whether this is the procedure for you.

Step 1

Our dentists will assess the condition of your jawbone with X-rays while also checking surrounding nerves and blood vessels.

If you do not have enough jawbone to accommodate an implant, our team may discuss bone grafting options with you.

Step 2

At your first surgical appointment, our team will numb specific areas in your mouth and using a scalpel, will make an incision and peel back the gum.

A pilot hole is then carefully drilled into your jawbone, as our team will gradually make this hole wider, preventing overheating of the site with regular flushing. This is important, as damaged bone can make it negatively impact on the success of any implants.

Step 3

We may use a self-threading implant to secure it in place but if not, a thread will be placed through your jaw which matches the thread of the implant.

Once your implant(s) are secured into your jawbone, we will place an ‘implant cap’ over the top to seal it and protect it from bacteria present in the mouth. This cap will also prevent excessive movement.

Your gum will then be sewn together with either dissolvable stitches or ones that require another visit to a member of our dental team to remove.

Step 4

And now, we wait!

It can take up to 6 months for your new implants to fuse with your jawbone, so you will be required to come in and see us for further X-rays and other tests to determine if your implants are settling successfully. If they aren’t, our team will discuss further options with you, such as further bone grafting.

If our team decides that your implants have fused, you can then have your new teeth fitted securely to your implants.

You will leave our surgery with a new set of natural looking teeth, that, with correct dental care, can last between 20 to 40 years!
