Braces correcting more than just misaligned teeth!

Malocclusions or misaligned teeth are common in the UK and these conditions can cause embarrassment when smiling, but the problem is far more serious than just affecting a patient’s smile. There are many health benefits attached to having straight teeth. Straight teeth are a lot easier to clean, because the bacteria in plaque can remain undetected in the little pockets caused by misaligned teeth, plaque causes infection of the gums which can promote bleeding and discomfort. Crooked teeth can wear unevenly and cause chipping and cracking and the inability to chew your food properly can lead to stomach pains. Protruding teeth are also more susceptible to injury and many patients with misaligned teeth also suffer from sleep apnoea. Another complication can be discomfort in the jaw. The list of conditions is long, but the use of braces Windsor can correct most of these problems leading to a healthy oral cavity. braces-windsor

Help in the developing years

It is common knowledge that attending to most things early is better than trying to correct a problem later and this applies to dental conditions as well. Doctor U Bose has been the principal dentist at Old Windsor for the past fourteen years and has helped correct the misalignment of many patients’ teeth over that period. If a patient has children, they are recommended to bring the little ones in from as early as possible to allow us to identify any dental problems that exist or that may manifest later.

A wide range of treatments

Dentistry has been incorporating technology into treatments for decades and the latest braces and aligners allow us to take a more targeted approach to orthodontic treatment. Braces Windsor are no longer just the original metal appliances that were worn in the past. Braces Windsor now incorporate a variety of appliances made from different materials, including clear and tooth-coloured dental safe plastic.

The traditional dental appliance has always used blocks which are attached to the outside of the teeth with a wire connecting them to bands to increase tension to move the teeth. These are still used today, but some fit onto the inside of the teeth and some are self-adjusting, requiring fewer trips to the dentist for manual adjustment. In latter years a different type of aligner has been created which fits over the teeth, in much the same way as a gum shield. These gum shield style aligners come in a series based on the condition being treated. Each aligner is worn for two to three weeks and is then replaced with another aligner which has a slightly different orientation, designed to move the teeth into a specific position. Each aligner must be worn for a minimum of twenty-two hours per day, but can be removed to eat and clean the teeth. At the end of the treatment period a special retainer needs to be worn for a specific period to hold the teeth in their new position.

Targeted treatment

The advances in orthodontics has allowed correction of misaligned teeth to be more targeted, as some appliances treat certain conditions more efficiently. The experience and skill of our dental clinician will guide a patient in selecting the best treatment for their condition.
